From Obama, the Tax Cut Nobody Heard Of

In this article Cooper mentions a reporter asking a half dozen people what had happened to their taxes once Obama took office. 59 year old Bob Paratore explains that the federal and state taxes had increased when in fact Obama has cut taxes allowing American families to have about an average of $65 a month. Those who were told taxes have actually been cut say that didn’t even notice. Obamas thought behind the tax cut was to have the people have more money to save or even spend to cycle through the economy.

This article relates to direct government, Obama takes on the responsibility of directing provision of the main problem with the economy by trying to add more money to the economy by cutting taxes for Americans.

  1. This article relates to class because it talks about tax-implantation. It also is important to note that the news coverage of Obama, and the global recession has not covered this tax cut. Without news coverage the general public will not hear about issues such as these. This type of story scares me as a political science minor. We as individuals must analyze the news we are hearing and seek it out. If we do not think critically of our news media and government we will not be represented by our government. Becoming politically active is key in getting issues the public wants to be heard. Congress is meant to represent citizens, however, citizens must remain observant to ensure policy change. Learning the tools to public policy will do nothing if my peers and I chose not to remain up to date on legislation. In politics if know one realizes a representative is helping them, then you have not helped your future voting campaign.

  3. The American people need to be worried that they do not know what is going on within the government. If something as important as a specific tax cut is not even noticed by the attentive public it tells us something about the government and the media coverage that follows it. We are always told what is not being done on the news and the critiques. However, when policies and cuts do get passed its almost as if because it carries no controversy it does not need to be covered. I agree with Mitchell regarding that the average American citizen must become more active in government or to some extent knowledgeable.
