This article discusses how Obama is making health insurance mandatory for every American. He stated that employers would have to share in the cost and that there would be a waiver for those who could not afford insurance. This relates to the legitimacy discussion we had in class, in that this type of government could be rejected as illegitimate. This also relates to the common themes about legitimation, especially money and knowledge are key influences. Officials think that this reform of the healthcare system will ultimately lower our federal deficit.

This article is a bit ambiguous. I would like to know more factual "how" than an opinion of unnamed "officials." I agree that this sort of action can be seen as illegitimate but because of such a recent spike in political polarity in the U.S. it would be hard, I believe, to accomplish such a feat. This also does pose an interesting topic of the influence money could possibly have on such policies.
ReplyDeleteI see that having mandatory health insurance is a smart idea. There is no cause that can show how not having insurance is not beneficial to the american population. IT may seem like a bad idea to force people to pay up front for issues that they do not have, or ever run into, but it will be less costly in the future for any one stricken with a stroke a bad luck. The thanks to this bill is really to those who have the safety net this issue provides, which is unforeseen for most who have to take part in this new policy.
