The federal government set new standards for big vehicles made in 2014 to use less fuel. It will require, for example, 20% less fuel consumption by off-road tractor-trailers by 2018. The Obama Administration used the tool of action, social regulation, to form this policy. It should be responded to with a high level of legitimacy from the over-all public, but not to the businesses that will have to use more resources to reduce the emissions of the tractor-trailers they produce. The effectiveness of this plan will probably be mediocre because if will reduce jobs and it will not have a big enough impact on lessening fuel consumption.

I disagree with your comment on how this reduction in fuel emissions is not going to have a high level of legitimacy from businesses. If the new standards for big vehicles in 2014 require the use of less fuel and car manufactures do not build vehicles with that in mind not only will they be making worthless cars but they will not be able to compete with the competition of other car companies in which their cars are more fuel efficient. I feel like if companies are able to make this type of a car with less gas consumption more people will again start to buy cars to commute. Also with bigger trucks using less gas, and being environmentally cleaner it shows how the nation is becoming green.
ReplyDeleteThe reduction of emissions is a great start to lowering our country's gas consumption, but we need more policies to actually improve the situation. We create about 5% of the world's energy and use around 25% of it which is a horrible statistic. Sure by 2040 all cars will have over 30 MPG and fuel emissions over 60% lower, but so will other countries too. We have to create incentives to not use gas products to eliminate all emissions completely.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Eric and disagree with Alec with respect to the level of legitimacy business will take from these new standards. It has been a trend in the automotive industry as of late to make the most fuel efficient cars. The level that is being set in place will only reinforce what has been going on. But what I believe businesses will find troubling is the government intrusion into the free market to limit the scope of their production (especially against foreign competitors) with what they can produce. This inhibits American auto makers to be able to compete with foreign companies unless they can make it fit into stricter standards.
