The airports are already avoided due to the long security delays, and they just might get worse. Numerous groups are fighting the new full body scanners that are being placed in airports across the nation. This full body scanners and full pat downs are causing people to boycott. People are saying that the equipment could be hazardous to their health and they should not be treated like criminals and be patted down. The issue of airplane security is very important, but the long delays in security are vital as well. Groups are urging citizens not to use airplanes and if they do to refuse the detector and make the wait longer with a full body search.

Whenever I think about this topic a Benjamin Franklin quote comes to mind "People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both." This quote shows that the compromise area between these two is very small and most likely varies for every person. For this reason it will always be impossible to please every group. If standards were not in place and events similar to 9/11 happened again I can only hope that these same groups would be begging for more security.
ReplyDeleteNot only could this practice be hazardous to health issues, but morality also comes in play. Although airport security should be top on our nations list of priorities, these images show a fully naked image of the persons body they are scanning. While most people may be completely fine with this detail if it is protecting our nation as a whole, others may not agree with this method of security as it may breach personal concerns of the individual.

This is a very relevant public issue but not on the basis of travelers rights being violated but for the exact opposite. It is every citizen’s right to be safe while on an airplane or at the airport whether flying or working. The full body scans and pat downs no matter how intrusive they may be, they are completely and utterly necessary to insure everyone’s collective safety. Airport security should be as comprehensive as possible, continually adapting by implementing the newest technologies. The call to boycott airports because of these full body scanners and pat downs is absurd. The collective safety and peace of mind that is provided by these thorough security practices are vital, and the minority’s negative feelings towards them, should never compromise them.

Even though the full body scans and the pat downs may cause longer lines and longer wait times at the security check point in the airport, this measure is definitely necessary for the safety of every individual. I do not understand why people would actual protest a safety regulation when the end result is for the better welfare/well-being/safety for them. Even if this practice may cause hazardous health issues, it is in place for a greater safety concern.
