In this article, the New York Times addresses the issue of unemployment. Typically, newspapers report on employment statistics for recent college grads, but this article focuses on those who are unemployed after the age of 50. People in this age group who are out of work tend to struggle more than younger adults in finding new employment and worry that they will never work again. This could be a problem if many in this older-and-unemployed category are forced into early retirement, therefore collecting their Social Security benefits early and draining their life savings while waiting to be old enough to be eligible to collect Social Security. As much as I worry about the job market for my peers and myself once I graduate, I feel like employers shouldn't look at older workers as expendable. Workers in this age group have years of experience behind them and still have years of valuable service ahead of them.
